See note on 2Sa 10:14. David sent Joab. David dispatched Joab, his army commander, with his mercenary soldiers and the army of Israel to continue the battle against Ammon begun the previous year (2Sa 10:14). Rabbah. The capital of the Ammonites, about twenty-four miles east of the Jordan River opposite Jericho. The previous year, Abishai had defeated the Ammonite army in the open country, after which the remaining Ammonites fled behind the walls of the city of Rabbah for protection (2Sa 10:14). Joab returned the next year to besiege the city. But David remained at Jerusalem. Staying home in such situations was not David's usual practice (2Sa 5:2; 2Sa 8:1-14; 2Sa 10:17; but cf. 2Sa 18:3; 2Sa 21:17); this explicit remark implies criticism of David for remaining behind, as well as setting the stage for his devastating iniquity.

Bathsheba. Not until 2Sa 12:24 is her name used again. Rather, to intensify the sin of adultery, it is emphasized that she was the wife of Uriah (2Sa 11:3, 2Sa 11:26; 2Sa 12:10, 2Sa 12:15). Even the NT says "her of Uriah" (Mat 1:6). Cf. Exo 20:17. Eliam. The father of Bathsheba was one of David's mighty men (2Sa 23:34). Since Eliam was the son of Ahithophel, Bathsheba was Ahithophel's granddaughter (cf. 2Sa 15:12; 2Sa 16:15). This could explain why Ahithophel, one of David's counselors (2Sa 15:12), later gave his allegiance to Absalom in his revolt against David. Uriah. Also one of David's mighty men (2Sa 23:39). Although a Hittite (cf. Gen 15:20; Exo 3:8, Exo 3:17, Exo 3:23), Uriah bore a Hebrew name meaning "the Lord is my light," indicating he was a worshiper of the one true God.

Failing twice to cover up his sin with Bathsheba, the frustrated and panicked David plotted the murder of Uriah by taking advantage of Uriah's unswerving loyalty to him as king, even having Uriah deliver his own death warrant. Thus, David engaged in another crime deserving of capital punishment (Lev 24:17). This is graphic proof of the extreme to which people go in pursuit of sin and in the absence of restraining grace.

Can a real believer ever tread this path? Can such a person be indeed a child of God? Though grace be not lost in such an awful case, the assurance and consolation of it must be suspended. All David's life, spirituality, and comfort in religion, we may be sure were lost. No man in such a case can have evidence to be satisfied that he is a believer. The higher a man's confidence is, who has sunk in wickedness, the greater his presumption and hypocrisy. Let not any one who resembles David in nothing but his transgressions, bolster up his confidence with this example. Let him follow David in his humiliation, repentance, and his other eminent graces, before he thinks himself only a backslider, and not a hypocrite. Let no opposer of the truth say, These are the fruits of faith! No; they are the effects of corrupt nature. Let us all watch against the beginnings of self-indulgence, and keep at the utmost distance from all evil. But with the Lord there is mercy and plenteous redemption. He will cast out no humble, penitent believer; nor will he suffer Satan to pluck his sheep out of his hand. Yet the Lord will recover his people, in such a way as will mark his abhorrence of their crimes, to hinder all who regard his word from abusing the encouragements of his mercy.

The mourning - Which was seven days. Nor could the nature of the thing admit of longer delay, lest the too early birth of the child might discover David's sin. Bare a son - By which it appears, That David continued in the state of impenitency for divers months together; and this notwithstanding his frequent attendance upon God's ordinances. Which is an eminent instance of the corruption of man's nature, of the deceitfulness of sin, and of the tremendous judgment of God in punishing one sin, by delivering a man up to another.
